FOR THE GREATER GOOD
Between a sporting hero's craving of imperfection
And the desperate scarring of chiselled faultless profile
I am falling short of whole
This beautiful amputee only wishes
He could hold you close enough
To scrub your one good eye clean
Completion has nowhere left to go
But toward its own deconstruction
And honestly we are burning brighter now.
I, LINEDANCER
Let me reassure you
The celebrity lookalike voluntarily modelled his scars
On those of his likeness earned in glossy centrefold car smash
If I promise to be good, will you take me home with you?
She says "Try and sleep now..." while fingers scratch the paintwork
And horses cut their mouths on all my reasons not to
There are no roads that led us here
No maps will get us home.
MOVING BEYOND MAINTENANCE
In the struggle to be the first in
It's becoming obvious... we're not so well connected
In the panic to be the first out
It's becoming obvious... we're not so well
And Jesus, this space rocket just washed the stars from his hair
Along with their broken promises
What if there's nothing out there?
HONKY TONKIN'
Say you'll be my sweetheart
Christ we're so glamorous with blood in our hair...
Meet me at the river and wear your prettiest dress
And I promise to wear mine
Go ahead and smear my lipstick good
And we'll renounce your fashionable friends who think that we look cheap
Gift-wrapped in ribbons and bows.
PAWS AND WINGS
With fingers in my mouth you taste so good
Oh pretty please show me your teeth and I'll show you mine
I get so physical around you...
And eyes shot blood-red tumble around yours baby-blue
Suddenly our clashing colours demand a make-over and quick.
HOWL!
Wide-eyed! The sweet night caught us suddenly drunk
And cast adrift beneath a string of neon stars
That spilled across her tender throat
Kiss me! Good 'n' bloody, rich and full
This tainted heart begs a little dysfunction
And welcomes some beautiful aberration.
Oh baby howl with me now!
Tonight we're howling beneath a single shining silver blade of moon
That cuts the flawless heart from each breast in turn.
A township with ambition boats its heroes outnumber its villains
And drowns the unsightly at the coast.
THE SUCCESS AND FAILURE OF ROCK
As I explained this is too unstable
I thought I fixed the leg of that chair days ago
But cutting inches from the three to meet the one
Only brought me closer to the floor... and it's cold down here
Just me and you
And the fat ol' moon is looking sharp again tonight
All wide gold grin... and you know we could
We could just get caught between it's teeth.
CELEBRATE GOOD TIMES COME ON
Belonging
And maybe that as swells the
Guts of churches
This communion of celebrity and stalker
May decline the flesh
Maybe not
Belonging
And maybe that as courts this
Season's distressed look,
Explicit prime time scarring
Looks so good on you
This fashionable branding
Looks good on me too
We all like a man in uniform don't we.

I saw Haress support Godspeed in Coventry over the weekend and haven't been able to stop myself thinking about their set. It doesn't surprise me that they turn out to be from Bishop's Castle because this is what the welsh border sounds like. Uncanny, unsettling, beautiful. Wonderful discovery, SteveC
